Kumail Nanjiani has opened up about his Marvel journey, revealing surprising details about the contract he signed before starring in Eternals (2021). Speaking in a recent interview, the actor and comedian shared that he had initially agreed to appear in six Marvel films — a commitment that made him believe he had secured his “job for the next 10 years.”
“I thought, ‘This is it, this is my career path for the next decade,’” Nanjiani explained. “But none of that happened.”
Nanjiani played Kingo, a cosmic-powered Eternal who disguised himself as a Bollywood star on Earth. While his performance was praised, Eternals itself received mixed reviews and was one of Marvel’s more divisive releases. Since then, Nanjiani has not reprised his role, and no updates have been provided about Kingo’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Reflecting on the situation, Nanjiani admitted that the unpredictability of Hollywood made him reconsider the security he thought the contract offered. “You realize that even in something as big as Marvel, nothing is guaranteed,” he said.
The actor also spoke candidly about the pressure and physical transformation he underwent for the role, which sparked viral conversations online about body image in Hollywood. While proud of his work, Nanjiani confessed that he has mixed feelings about the expectations placed on actors who step into superhero franchises.
Fans have been left wondering whether Marvel has future plans for Kingo, especially as the MCU continues to expand with new films and series. But for now, Nanjiani seems to have accepted that his Marvel journey may not unfold as originally envisioned.
“I’m grateful for the experience,” he said. “But I’ve learned not to count on what’s written in a contract. You just never know.”
