Nineteen-year-old boxer Isis Sio has emerged from a medically induced coma and is breathing on her own, bringing a wave of relief to the boxing community after a terrifying knockout left her hospitalized over the weekend.
Sio was knocked unconscious just 78 seconds into her junior flyweight bout against Jocelyn Camarillo on Saturday at San Bernardino’s National Orange Show Event Center. After taking a series of head shots, she collapsed to the canvas and was seen convulsing, prompting immediate medical intervention. She was rushed to Loma Linda University Health Medical Center, where doctors placed her in a medically induced coma to allow her brain to rest and control intracranial pressure.
By Monday, just two days after the fight, Sio’s condition had significantly improved. ProBox TV, the event’s promoter, announced that she was no longer on a ventilator and was breathing independently. She remains in intensive care, but her family says she is now able to follow commands and have conversations.
“Isis remains in ICU, but she is off the ventilator, and we are hopeful for her progression,” Sio’s camp said in a statement. “We are awaiting further updates from her medical team. She is currently under the care of three specialized medical divisions who are closely monitoring her condition” .
The North Dakota native has now lost three of her four professional bouts since her debut in September 2025 . Her January 26 fight against Perla Bazaldua also ended in a stoppage, leading to online speculation about why she was allowed to compete again so quickly.
Sio’s camp addressed those concerns directly, clarifying that the January loss came from a liver shot, not a head strike. A blow to the liver can trigger vasovagal syncope, a sudden drop in blood pressure and heart rate that can cause temporary paralysis and collapse. Because the stoppage was not head-related, Sio served only a 45-day medical suspension and was fully cleared to return to the ring.
“Her decision to compete on Saturday, March 21, against Jocelyn Camarillo was not made lightly, but rather thoughtfully reviewed and analyzed prior to acceptance,” her team stated.
Camarillo, who fights for Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions, expressed relief at Sio’s recovery. Following the fight, she posted on Instagram: “My heart is with Isis and keeping her in my prayers and wishing her a full recovery” . After news broke that Sio was awake, Camarillo added: “Thank you, Jesus”.
Most Valuable Promotions also released a statement wishing Sio “strength, healing, and a full recovery” . However, the organization faced criticism after posting a clip of the knockout with the caption “KO of the year??” before Sio’s condition was publicly known.
Sio remains under close observation by three specialized medical divisions as she continues her recovery . No timeline has been given for her release from the hospital, but her family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support .
The young boxer, described by her team as “a passionate, disciplined, and well-prepared athlete,” now faces a long recovery. But after two days of uncertainty, the news that she is awake and speaking has offered a breath of hope to everyone following her story.
