The Parr family is officially suiting up again. Disney and Pixar have announced that “Incredibles 3” will hit theaters on June 16, 2028, giving fans a concrete date for the highly anticipated threequel. The announcement came via Pixar’s Instagram handle as part of Disney’s Summer 2028 lineup reveal, which also includes a live-action “Lilo & Stitch 2” opening on May 26. While the third installment marks a new era for the franchise, it brings significant changes behind the scenes, and the return of beloved voices in front of the microphone.

For the first time in franchise history, Brad Bird will not direct an “Incredibles” film. Instead, Peter Sohn, who previously directed Pixar’s “Elemental” and “The Good Dinosaur”, will take over directing duties. However, Brad Bird remains involved as writer and producer, ensuring the creative vision that launched the franchise in 2004 stays intact. Bird’s schedule reportedly prevented him from directing, as he’s currently in pre-production on “Ray Gunn” for Skydance.

Sohn’s connection to Pixar runs deep. He voiced various characters in the first two “Incredibles” films and has been with the studio for years. His recent success with “Elemental,” which grossed nearly $500 million worldwide despite a slow start, demonstrated his ability to handle emotionally resonant animated storytelling.

Fans can expect familiar voices when they return to the world of supers. Craig T. Nelson is back as Bob Parr, aka Mr. Incredible, alongside Holly Hunter as Helen Parr, aka Elastigirl . Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Lucius Best, better known as Frozone . Sarah Vowell returns as the perpetually invisible teenager Violet, and Huck Milner voices Dash, now likely older and faster than ever. The one and only Edna Mode, voiced by Brad Bird himself, will presumably deliver more unforgettable one-liners about the dangers of capes.

Plot details remain tightly under wraps, which is typical for Pixar productions this far from release. The first two films followed the Parr family’s journey from hiding to heroism. In 2004’s “The Incredibles,” Bob and Helen attempted to live a normal suburban life after the government banned superpowers . The 2018 sequel, released a staggering 14 years later, saw the family restoring public trust in masked vigilantes while battling a new cybercriminal.

For “Incredibles 3,” speculation is rampant. The sequel will arrive 10 years after “Incredibles 2,” meaning Dash, Violet, and Jack-Jack will have aged significantly. Jack-Jack, the baby whose powers exploded in the second film, will likely be a walking chaos machine with even more abilities. Violet may be navigating college applications and complicated relationships while maintaining her secret identity. The dynamic between a family of supers dealing with teenage drama alongside supervillain threats remains fertile ground for Pixar’s signature blend of heart and humor.

The “Incredibles” franchise isn’t just beloved, it’s a box office juggernaut. The original 2004 film grossed $630 million worldwide, an impressive total for its time. The sequel shattered expectations with $1.24 billion globally, becoming one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time. Combined, the two films have earned approximately $1.87 billion for Disney and Pixar.

That success explains why Pixar is returning to the well. The studio has several sequels in various stages of development, including “Toy Story 5” (set for June 2026), a third “Monsters, Inc.” film, and a “Coco” sequel. Original films like “Hoppers” (recently released) and “Gatto”, a musical about a cat thief, continue to round out the slate.

With a June 16, 2028, release date, fans have just over two years to wait before the Parr family returns to the big screen. The date was previously reserved as an untitled Pixar release, and no competing films are currently scheduled for that weekend.

For now, audiences can revisit the first two films on Disney+ or catch them in theaters if special screenings arise. The announcement gives Pixar ample time to craft something special, and given the studio’s track record, “Incredibles 3” will likely be worth the wait.
