Gloria Steinem, the enduring feminist activist and writer, has died at 92. A post shared on Steinem’s Instagram confirmed that the women’s liberation leader “passed away peacefully at her home in New York City, surrounded by some of the many who loved her,” on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
Steinem dedicated her life to social and political change. In the 1960s, she embarked on her career as a champion of women’s rights by spotlighting topics like sexuality and reproductive and workplace rights with her seminal journalism. In addition to writing for New York magazine, she co-founded Ms. magazine as well as organizations like the Women’s Action Alliance and the National Women’s Political Caucus.
Steinem was the subject of the 2024 biopic The Glorias, based on her memoir My Life on the Road, which earned her a new generation of fans. Her voice remained a constant in the fight for equality, and her impact on the feminist movement will be felt for generations to come.
