Global pop icon Ed Sheeran has opened up about the chilling reality of fame, revealing that he, his wife Cherry Seaborn, and their two daughters will likely need 24-hour security protection for the rest of his life due to sinister incidents, including kidnap threats and break-in attempts.
Speaking in a candid interview on Australia’s 60 Minutes, the 34-year-old singer didn’t hold back when describing the darker side of stardom.
“We have a level of security that probably won’t change until I pass away. That’s just our life now,” Ed said.
“It’s Way More Sinister Than Just Fans”
Living on his countryside estate in Suffolk, Ed shared that he’s faced far more than excited fans wanting autographs.
“It’s things that people don’t really even take into account,” he said. “Like kidnap threats and s*** like that. We’ve had attempted break-ins, things left on my car… It’s way more sinister.”
These disturbing experiences have forced the Grammy-winning artist to beef up his security team — not just for himself, but also for his wife and daughters, Lyra, 4, and Jupiter, 3.
“I’ve Had Real Arguments” Over Privacy
While Ed generally obliges fans who ask for photos, he draws the line when his children are involved.
“I’ve had some real arguments before. I’m fine with taking pictures, but I just think it’s weird with a four-year-old and a three-year-old,” he admitted.
“I want to still tour and make music, but I also want a normal life for my kids. That’s the new challenge — being a present dad and keeping them safe.”
He previously told The Louis Theroux Podcast about hiring full-time security after experiencing “a couple of weird things,” including a serious break-in attempt.
A Father First: “My Kids Didn’t Sign Up for This”
The singer says the toll of fame is hardest on his children, who never asked for a public life. Ed rarely takes them out to public places anymore — no parks, no zoos — because of people trying to photograph or film them.
“I’m very, very private about my children’s image,” he said.
“I can’t push them on a swing in a public park without someone pulling out a camera. People say that’s the trade-off — but my kids didn’t sign up to that.”
Finding Peace in Fatherhood
Despite the challenges, Ed is embracing this new season of his life. While he’s still committed to writing, touring, and making music, he says his priority is now family — and keeping them protected.
“There’s a new set of challenges I want to explore now — and that is having a family and being a dad.”
In the glitter of fame, Ed Sheeran reminds us of the price that sometimes comes with global success — and the lengths a father will go to protect his family.
