The Wicked star will bring the legendary “Mama Africa” to life in a musical drama set against the tumultuous backdrop of 1980s apartheid-era South Africa. Production begins June 29th in Cape Town, injecting roughly ZAR 300 million into the South African film industry.

Directed by Academy Award winner Bill Condon (Dreamgirls, Kiss of the Spider Woman), The Road Home follows exiled trumpeter Hugh Masekela. Caught between his mentor’s boycott of Paul Simon’s Graceland album and his belief in music as a weapon, Masekela joins forces with lifelong collaborator Miriam Makeba to form a supergroup designed to carry South Africa’s voice to the world.

Thabo Rametsi plays Masekela, with Oscar nominee Guy Pearce as Archbishop Trevor Huddleston. The screenplay, written by Michael Bronner from a story co-created with acclaimed South African novelist Zakes Mda, was developed through extensive research to ensure authenticity. The film will feature new recordings of iconic songs from Masekela, Makeba, and Simon’s catalogues.

The production represents a major vote of confidence in local talent. Beyond the 300 crew members, the film will employ 68 local cast members and up to 3,500 extras. CANAL+ is largely financing the project through its STUDIOCANAL arm, reinforcing South Africa’s status as a world-class filming destination. MultiChoice Group has noted that the production underscores CANAL+’s commitment to premium storytelling in the region.

Mama Africa’s legacy as a freedom fighter and cultural diplomat remains powerful. Her 1976 United Nations speech, “We are not asking for sympathy. We are asking for justice”, still echoes globally. As The Road Home prepares for its June production start, the film promises to celebrate that resilience while spotlighting the growing opportunities within the South African film industry.
