Charles Spencer is speaking out about the fractured relationship between his nephews. In a new interview, Princess Diana’s brother said he hopes the rift between Prince William and Prince Harry will one day be “resolved.” The Charles Spencer William Harry rift has been a subject of intense public speculation for years, but Spencer’s comments mark a rare public acknowledgment from within the family.
Spencer, who has largely avoided commenting on royal drama, said it’s painful to watch the brothers grow further apart. He noted that his own experience with family estrangement, including his estrangement from his brother, Earl Spencer, has taught him how difficult these divisions can be to repair. He expressed hope that time and perspective would eventually bring the brothers back together, though he stopped short of predicting when or how that might happen.
The rift between William and Harry has deepened since Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California. Harry’s memoir Spare and subsequent interviews widened the distance further. The brothers have appeared together only a handful of times since, most notably at family funerals and, more recently, at events surrounding King Charles’s health. Whether reconciliation is possible remains an open question.
