A mother arrived at a highway accident scene Tuesday morning to identify a victim. She never expected to find her daughter. Hours later, she buried both her child and the man she married.
Karla Thaynnara, a 25-year-old Brazilian influencer and nurse, died instantly when her motorcycle collided with a car on the EPIA highway near Brasília’s Ayrton Senna bridge around 8 a.m. local time. The impact threw her onto the asphalt. A truck behind her couldn’t stop in time.
Her father, retired Military Police officer José Carlos Andrade Nogueira, 53, was dispatched to the scene. He identified his daughter’s body. Then he drew his service weapon and took his own life before officers could intervene.
Karla built an Instagram following of more than 64,000 people by sharing her two great loves: motorcycles and family. Her feed showed her straddling bikes, lifting weights at the gym, and posing with her 7-year-old daughter.
She worked as a nurse and at a local motorcycle dealership, chasing dreams that recently crystallized into something permanent. Last August, she bought an apartment for herself and her daughter.
“It’s more than just four walls and a roof,” she wrote at the time. “It’s proof that dreams really do come true when you refuse to give up on them. I was just 17, with a four-month-old baby in my arms. I didn’t have much, but I had determination, and a huge desire to build a better life”.
Her final Instagram post, shared February 21, showed her working out at the gym, living the life she’d built from nothing.
Karla rode her motorcycle Tuesday morning when she collided with a car near the Ayrton Senna viaduct. The crash threw her onto the highway. A truck behind her ran over her before anyone could react.
The Fire Department arrived. She had no vital signs.
José Carlos worked as a reserve Military Police officer. He was among those dispatched to the scene. He saw his daughter on the road. What happened next unfolded in seconds.
“He was very gentle and always thought about his family when he went to work. He was a golden father,” a work friend later told reporters.
Police officers at the scene tried to intervene. They couldn’t stop him.
The same highway that took Karla’s life became the place her father chose to leave his.
About 200 people gathered Wednesday at Campo da Esperança cemetery in southern Brasília to say goodbye. The Secretary of Public Security of the Federal District, Sandro Avelar, attended and called it “a great tragedy”.
Friends on motorcycles performed a “cortejo”, revving their engines in tribute to Karla’s passion. Mourners sang “Pais e Filhos” by Legião Urbana as father and daughter were laid to rest.
Karla’s 7-year-old daughter now carries the weight of that morning. A friend who knew Karla for nearly eight years spoke simply: “She was mother and father, actually. She never let her daughter lack anything”.
On Instagram, the family posted side-by-side photos of Karla and José Carlos. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Karla and José Carlos,” they wrote in Portuguese . A second post showed a motorcycle caravan riding in Karla’s honor. The caption read: “My princess, you will forever remain in our hearts”.
Traffic safety experts point to the EPIA highway itself. The road near the Ayrton Senna viaduct sees heavy vehicle traffic daily, including buses and trucks, while serving as access to residential areas. One researcher called it “a very dangerous stretch” requiring urgent intervention.
The crash remains under investigation.
For now, Brasília mourns a young mother who built something from nothing, a retired officer who served his community, and a 7-year-old who lost everyone in a single morning.
