HBO has officially ordered a second season of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the “Game of Thrones” prequel series following the adventures of the future knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his squire, the young Prince Aegon V Targaryen.
The HBO renewal comes less than a week before the series finale of Season 1, which airs Sunday, March 29, 2026. The show debuted in January to strong reviews and solid viewership, establishing itself as the next pillar of HBO’s expanding Westeros franchise.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is the second prequel series to emerge from George R.R. Martin’s world following “House of the Dragon,” which wrapped its second season in 2024. Unlike “House of the Dragon,” which covers decades of Targaryen civil war, this series adapts Martin’s “Dunk and Egg” novellas, lighter, more episodic tales set roughly 90 years before the events of “Game of Thrones”.
The series stars Peter Claffey as Dunk and Dexter Sol Ansell as Egg, with Finn Bennett, Bertie Carvel, and Sam Spruell in supporting roles. The first season adapts “The Hedge Knight,” the first of three published novellas. A second season would likely move on to “The Sworn Sword,” the next installment in the series.
Though HBO has not released official viewership figures for the series since its premiere week, the HBO renewal signals confidence in the property. The show holds a 94% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes and has been praised for its lighter tone and focus on honor and friendship over the political scheming that defined its predecessors .
Martin, who serves as an executive producer on the series, has been vocal about his enthusiasm for the adaptation. In a blog post earlier this year, he called the show “the truest adaptation of my work to date” and praised Claffey and Ansell’s performances.
Season 2 will likely adapt “The Sworn Sword,” the second novella in Martin’s “Tales of Dunk and Egg” series. The story follows Dunk and Egg as they travel to the Reach, where they become entangled in a dispute between a struggling knight and a powerful neighboring lord . The novella introduces new characters and further explores the complex politics of Westeros in the era before the Targaryens lost their dragons.
Casting for Season 2 has not yet been announced, though several key characters from the second novella, including Lady Rohanne Webber, Ser Eustace Osgrey, and the Blackfish’s ancestor, are expected to appear.
The renewal of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” adds to a growing slate of “Game of Thrones” projects in development. HBO is reportedly working on multiple other prequel concepts, though none have been officially greenlit beyond the currently airing series.
“House of the Dragon” is expected to return for its third season in 2027, with production underway. Meanwhile, Martin’s long-awaited sixth novel in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, “The Winds of Winter,” remains unpublished, leaving the prequel series as the primary source of new Westeros content for the foreseeable future.
Season 1 of “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” concludes this Sunday with an episode expected to cover the climactic trial by combat from “The Hedge Knight.” The series has already set up threads that will carry into future seasons, including Dunk’s growing reputation and Egg’s hidden identity as a Targaryen prince.
A release date for Season 2 has not been announced, though production is expected to begin in 2027, with a likely premiere in 2028.
