Kenny Ogungbe, founder of Kennis Music, has revealed that his label was close to signing the legendary Plantashun Boiz before 2Baba (then 2Face) decided to go solo. Speaking with Osi Suave, Ogungbe shared how a deal with the group nearly came to fruition following their collaboration with Tony Tetuila on the hit album Omode Meta Shere.
I gave Austin [Blackface] the contract, but nothing happened,” Ogungbe explained. “After a while, 2Face called me and said he wanted to be on his own. I said, no problem.
Ogungbe dismissed claims that Kennis Music played a part in the breakup of Plantashun Boiz, stating that 2Baba’s decision to embark on a solo career was entirely his own.
Formed in 2000, Plantashun Boiz—comprising 2Baba, Blackface, and Faze—made waves with their unique blend of hip-hop and R&B before disbanding in 2004 after just two albums. Post-breakup, 2Baba signed with Kennis Music and dropped Face 2 Face, a landmark album that introduced the world to the timeless hit African Queen, launching him into international fame.
In 2008, 2Baba left Kennis Music to establish his own label, Hypertek Entertainment, cementing his legacy as one of Nigeria’s greatest music icons.
Ogungbe’s reflections highlight what could have been a different trajectory for Plantashun Boiz under Kennis Music, but as fate would have it, 2Baba’s solo move rewrote Nigerian music history.
