The 67th Grammy Awards nominations are out, and it’s a proud moment for Nigerian music, with the Best African Music Performance category dominated entirely by Nigerian artists. The announcement made on November 8 reveals that Nigeria’s influence on the global music scene continues to surge, with Burna Boy, Asake, Rema, Tems, and Yemi Alade all landing nominations in various categories.

In a twist, American star Chris Brown also joined the Best African Music Performance category with his track “Sensational”, featuring Nigerian heavyweights Davido and Lojay. Other nominees include Yemi Alade’s “Tomorrow,” Asake and Wizkid’s collaboration “MMS,” Burna Boy’s “Higher,” and Tems with “Love Me JeJe.”

This category has quickly become a highlight, showcasing African music’s growing influence. At last year’s Grammys, the Best African Music Performance category made its debut, with South African singer Tyla taking home the trophy for “Water.”

Nigerian stars are also shining in the Best Global Music Album category, where Tems’ debut album “Born In The Wild” and Rema’s sophomore album “HEIS” are nominated. They’ll be competing against international artists like Matt B with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Alkebulan II,” Ciro Hurtado’s “Paisajes,” and Antonio Rey’s “Historias De Un Flamenco.”

Adding to her accolades, Tems scored a nomination in the Best R&B Song category for her hit “Burning.” This category is unique this year, with only female artists nominated, setting up Tems to face off with Kehlani’s “After Hours,” Coco Jones’ “Here We Go (Uh Oh),” Muni Long’s “Ruined Me,” and SZA’s “Saturn.”

The 67th Grammys promises to be an electrifying event, with Nigerian talent taking center stage and marking a significant milestone for African music on the global stage. Fans worldwide are eagerly awaiting the ceremony, set to air live on February 2, 2025, to see if these rising stars can bring home the gold.
