J. Cole has revealed why he ultimately pulled back from a diss aimed at Kendrick Lamar, explaining that he chose to steer clear of a public feud that could have led to unnecessary tension. The rapper first responded to Lamar in his track 7 Minute Drill, where he threw shade with the line “he fell off like the Simpsons.” This came after Kendrick’s apparent jabs at Cole and Drake on the track Like That by Future and Metro Boomin.
However, during his performance at the 2024 Dreamville Festival in North Carolina, J. Cole took a moment to apologize to Kendrick. Reflecting on the situation, Cole admitted that his single Port Antonio was influenced by the desire of others to stir up drama for clicks and profit. He explained how engaging in the feud would have risked their relationship for the sake of fan spectacle.
In his lyrics, Cole touches on why he made this choice, rapping, “I pulled the plug because I saw where that was about to go, they wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make their pockets grow. They see the fire in my pen and think I’m dogging smoke. I wouldn’t have lost the battle, dog, I would’ve lost a bro, I would’ve gained a foe, and all for what?”
Cole’s reflection speaks to his decision to prioritize relationships over drama—a perspective that highlights his grounded approach to the music industry, even as fans crave rivalry.
