Beyoncé is stepping up to support communities devastated by recent flooding in Indiana. Her BeyGOOD Foundation announced it is donating $200,000 in grants toward relief efforts in the hardest-hit areas, including the city of Gary.
The donation will be channeled through two local organizations, City Life Center and Angel by Nature, that are on the ground providing critical assistance to displaced families. The funds will help provide food, household supplies, and other essential resources to thousands of residents affected by the disaster.
“We are incredibly grateful to Beyoncé and her BeyGOOD Foundation for this generous donation,” a statement from the foundation read, noting the funds would support “critical relief and recovery efforts in the neediest areas.”
The donation comes as Gary and surrounding communities continue to recover from a devastating derecho on August 11 that brought hurricane-force winds of up to 99 mph, tornadoes, and widespread flooding. The storms left more than 1,000 people displaced and caused damage that officials estimate could exceed $5 billion. Over 1 million Hoosiers lost power at the storm’s peak, with some Gary residents waiting nearly two weeks for electricity to return.
Beyoncé’s contribution adds to a wave of support for the predominantly Black city, including a $100,000 donation from Gary native and NBA All-Star Darius Garland and a 1,000-meal giveaway organized by food critic Keith Lee.
