Busy Philipps Reveals Rare Brain Tumor Diagnosis, Two Surgeries: “Grateful to Be Alive”

Busy Philipps revealed she was diagnosed with a rare malignant brain tumor and underwent two brain surgeries during the “weirdest six months of [her] life.” The Dawson’s Creek alum said in her People cover story, published Wednesday, that she is “grateful to be alive.”

The 47-year-old actress first went to the hospital in February 2026 after what she thought was a pinched nerve, but tests revealed she had a tumor in her left frontal lobe. Less than two months later, in April 2026, she underwent a craniotomy to remove it. However, in the weeks following the procedure, she started experiencing vision issues and weakness in her right arm. An MRI revealed her tumor had grown back quickly. On May 26, she had a second surgery to remove the regrowth. She also began a clinical trial involving a newly developed drug for her specific tumor.

“I’m just so lucky,” she told People. “I’m so grateful to be alive.” Philipps acknowledged that her treatment was made possible by the “privilege” of the medical care she could access with her union insurance and support from friends.

Despite the incredibly difficult months, she’s found moments of joy. In July, she went on a girls’ trip to Scotland to celebrate her 47th birthday, something she said made her feel like she was getting back to normal.
