Lil Nas X is sharing a candid update on his mental health journey. The 27-year-old rapper revealed that he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has spent months in rehab following a troubling incident in Los Angeles last year.

In an emotional video posted to Instagram, the Grammy-winning artist said he is now focused on recovery and prioritizing his well-being. “I have a therapist now and a psychiatrist, which has been really helpful,” he shared. “When I got my bipolar disorder diagnosis, I feel like I had known for the past few years, but I didn’t want to admit to it.”

The update comes nearly one year after Lil Nas X was arrested and hospitalized in Los Angeles. Police responded to a call about a naked man walking on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City around 6 a.m. on August 21, 2025. According to authorities, the rapper charged at officers when they arrived and was taken into custody.

Police suspected a possible overdose and transported him to a local hospital before he was booked. He was initially released on $75,000 bail with the condition that he attend drug treatment. Charges escalated to four felonies: three counts of battery with injury on a police officer and one count of resisting an executive officer.

Following the incident, Lil Nas X spent two months in an Arizona inpatient treatment center, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The court determined that the encounter with police was the result of his mental health condition and appeared to be an “aberration” from his usual behavior.

In April 2026, a judge allowed him to enter a mental health diversion program. If he sticks to his treatment plan and obeys all laws for two years, the four felony charges against him will be dismissed.

Today, Lil Nas X says he is in a much better place. “I’m feeling better. I’m creating freely. And there’s less fear in my heart,” he said. He credited his therapist, psychiatrist, and time with family in Atlanta and Los Angeles for helping him “ground myself down to Earth and get out of my head”.

The “Old Town Road” rapper also assured fans that new music is on the way. “I love you and all I want to do is continue to try to make you proud and make myself proud,” he said.
