According to new data from Luminate, Thriller saw a 28% spike in sales during the most recent tracking week, selling 3,900 copies in the U.S. That leap pushed the album from No. 17 to No. 10 on the Vinyl Albums chart. While not all sales were vinyl, MJ’s magnum opus remains a staple for record collectors around the world.
The sales surge also helped the iconic album rise on other charts. Thriller jumped from No. 30 to No. 25 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, which tracks overall purchases across formats—vinyl, CD, cassette, and digital.
But that’s just the beginning.
This week, Thriller is charting in five different Billboard categories, and it’s climbing in all of them. On the Top R&B Albums chart, it rose to No. 13, while it soared to No. 29 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums ranking.
Its biggest move? A 30-spot leap on the Billboard 200, landing at No. 108. That jump was powered by 11,500 equivalent album units—most of which came from streaming platforms, proving that Jackson’s influence extends well beyond physical formats.
And it’s not just Thriller making waves.
Jackson’s The Essential Michael Jackson, a compilation of his greatest hits (including many from Thriller), also continues its strong chart presence. It climbed to No. 88 on the Billboard 200 and remains steady on both the Top R&B Albums (No. 10) and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums (No. 23) charts.
