Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay is finally telling her truth — on her own terms.
In her directorial debut My Mom Jayne, a new documentary premiering on HBO, the 61-year-old actress opens up about a deeply personal family secret that she’s carried for most of her life. The film focuses on her late mother, Hollywood icon Jayne Mansfield, but it also reveals a long-hidden truth: musician Nelson Sardelli is Mariska’s biological father — not actor and bodybuilder Mickey Hargitay, who raised her and whom she long believed to be her dad.
“I was so fearful to have to confront it before I was ready,” Hargitay told Entertainment Weekly. “Thank God it never went anywhere. It’s been a real gift to me to be able to tell it in my time when I was ready.”
Mickey Hargitay and Jayne Mansfield were married from 1958 to 1964, during which time Mansfield had a brief affair with Sardelli. Though Hargitay began suspecting the truth in her 20s, she didn’t fully confirm it until around age 30. Even then, she chose to keep it private — out of loyalty to Mickey, who raised her as his own following Mansfield’s death in a tragic car crash in 1967.
“Nothing could change my love, respect, admiration, and gratitude for Mickey,” she shared. “As I got to know Nelson, as he explained to me what happened, it just became a much more three-dimensional story.”
The truth was actually first published in a 1992 biography of Mansfield, Here They Are, Jayne Mansfield, written by her former publicist, Raymond Strait. Still, remarkably, the revelation stayed largely under the radar for decades. Hargitay calls this “nothing short of a miracle.”
Her new film, she says, has been a deeply healing experience — not just for her, but for her siblings as well. It allowed her to explore her mother’s life, legacy, and the complicated dynamics of her family history with honesty and grace.
“I realized that everyone’s doing the best they can,” Hargitay said. “It wasn’t so black and white anymore to me.”
