After months of online speculation, filmmaker and DC Studios co-head James Gunn has officially confirmed that the Amanda Waller spin-off series is not canceled and remains in active development.

Gunn Debunks Cancellation Rumors

Responding directly to a fan on Threads, Gunn firmly shut down swirling rumors suggesting the show was either canceled or being reworked into a different project like Checkmate. When asked if the rumor was “B.S.,” he simply responded: “Yes.” When pressed further about the show’s status, he added another “Yes,” confirming it is still moving forward.

About the ‘Waller’ Series

First announced in January 2023 as part of Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe Chapter One: Gods and Monsters slate, Waller was introduced alongside other key titles like SupermanThe Authority, and Lanterns. The series will feature Viola Davis reprising her role as the ruthless A.R.G.U.S. boss Amanda Waller, a character she’s portrayed since 2016’s Suicide Squad.

Also confirmed to appear are:

Steve Agee as John Economos

Danielle Brooks as Leota Adebayo

Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.

The series connects directly to the events of Peacemaker, which Gunn also created, and will expand on Waller’s role within the DCU’s evolving structure. Notably, Peacemaker Season 2 reveals that Rick Flag Sr. now controls A.R.G.U.S., potentially reshaping Waller’s power and position moving forward.

Delays and Timeline

Originally aiming for a late 2024 releaseWaller was delayed due to the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. While no new release date has been announced, the project is still slated for Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service.

Viola Davis remains active in the DCU, having voiced Waller in 2024’s Creature Commandos and appeared in Peacemaker Season 1. Gunn previously noted that she does not appear in Superman(releasing July 11, 2025), although that comment predates the film’s current production phase.

Final Word

In a separate post, Gunn clarified that a recently canceled mystery DC project did not involve Waller, reaffirming its secure spot in the future of the new DC Universe.

So, fans of Amanda Waller and the gritty Peacemaker corner of the DCU can rest easy — the boss is still in the game.
