Fans of How to Train Your Dragon are counting down the days to the release of the much-anticipated live-action adaptation—and the excitement is soaring. With the buzz following the recent success of Disney’s Lilo & Stitch live-action remake, all eyes are now on Toothless and Hiccup as they prepare to take flight once again on the big screen.
Director Dean DeBlois Returns—and Hints at a Darker Sequel
Dean DeBlois, who directed the original animated trilogy, is back at the helm for the live-action version. And while the first film hasn’t even landed yet, the director is already looking ahead to the sequel—and it’s not going to be all fireballs and fun.
In a recent interview with ComicBook, DeBlois shared insight into his vision for the second installment:
“Certainly in the second movie, tackling the whole idea of Toothless being weaponized and turned against Hiccup and Stoick intervening like that, that’s a pretty heavy moment. It was heavy for animation.”
Now imagine that scene in a live-action format—emotions running raw, tension through the roof. DeBlois confirmed that the story is still in the writing phase but teased that the sequel will be “even weightier” than its animated counterpart:
“There’s something about the second movie. That, for most fans, is their favorite because it tackles tougher subject matter. It’s a little bit darker and more expansive, so I’m looking forward to it.”
Could Cate Blanchett Return as Valka?
One of the biggest highlights of How to Train Your Dragon 2 was Cate Blanchett’s portrayal of Valka, Hiccup’s long-lost mother and a fierce dragon rescuer. And now, fans may have reason to hope she’ll return in the live-action sequel.
DeBlois, who wrote the character specifically with Blanchett in mind, said he’s already reaching out:
“I think she is probably waiting for a script, but I’ve been knocking on that door. I wrote the character of Valka for her, so I told her it’ll always be hers to turn down first.”
A Beloved Story Flies Again
The original How to Train Your Dragon film told the story of Hiccup, a young Viking whose life changes when he befriends a wounded dragon, Toothless. The heartwarming and high-flying adventure became an instant classic, grossing over $494 million worldwide, earning two Oscar nominations, and achieving a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
With Dean DeBlois bringing his creative vision to live-action, fans can expect both nostalgia and new emotional depths. Whether the remake matches or exceeds the original’s success remains to be seen—but one thing’s for sure: the dragons are back, and they mean business.
