As investigations continue into the tragic and controversial death of Afrobeats star Mohbad, a key witness has come forward with a detailed account of the singer’s last hours—shedding more light on the emotional turmoil and physical confrontations that marked his final day alive.
At the ongoing coroner’s inquest, a professional driver who chauffeured Mohbad to his last show before his untimely death gave a gripping eyewitness testimony. The driver, with over 20 years in the car hire business, recalled that the day started peacefully, but quickly spiraled into chaos.
“Mohbad came out of his house with his wife and son. He looked happy and was even playing with the child,” the driver said.
However, during the ride to the show, tensions flared between Mohbad and his wife, Wunmi, as they argued in Yoruba. The driver, though not fluent, caught a line that stuck with him:
“Wunmi said in pidgin, ‘you dey disgrace me and your pikin.’ She even threatened not to go again, but we all begged her.”
After performing, Mohbad was escorted back to the vehicle by soldiers due to an aggressive crowd of area boys. The singer reportedly became visibly agitated and attempted to confront the crowd, which escalated into a physical altercation with his close associate, Primeboy.
“He told Primeboy to get down and started punching him. Primeboy kept saying, ‘Mohbad I can’t fight you,’ but Mohbad didn’t stop. He hit him until he injured his hand on the Prado glass,” the driver testified.
The injury left bloodstains on the car’s footmat and on Wunmi’s clothes. But things only worsened on the drive back home.
“Mohbad and Wunmi started arguing again. She called him names like ‘oloriburuku’ and ‘oloshi.’She even brought up a loan she took for him in 2020. Then she grabbed his shirt until his necklace broke.”
Visibly upset, the driver condemned Wunmi’s actions, saying, “If Wunmi was my wife, I would have beaten her blue-black for the nonsense she did in that car.”
He also debunked rumors that Mohbad tried to throw his son into a river, calling it a blatant lie.
Later that night, the driver said he slept in his car, and around 3 a.m., some of Mohbad’s crew requested a trip to the pharmacy, but he declined due to fuel shortage. By morning, when he knocked on the gate, Wunmi finally answered around 11 a.m., saying she thought he had left. She also agreed to pay for the damages on the car.
But the shocker came the next day.
“I got a call to report to the police station. Then a friend told me Mohbad had died. I was shocked—how come?”
