The dinosaurs are coming back to the big screen, and they have a new formidable opponent. In a major casting update that has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, Scarlett Johansson has officially signed on to lead the upcoming “Jurassic World Rebirth.” Following a period of intense development, reports confirmed on Thursday, April 9, 2026, that the fifth installment in the Jurassic World saga is officially moving into pre-production, with cameras set to roll this September.

The Scarlett Johansson Jurassic World Rebirth filming 2026 marks the actress’s highly anticipated return to major franchise filmmaking since her tenure as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While plot details are being kept in a “Raptor-proof” vault, Johansson is reportedly playing a seasoned covert operations expert named Zora Bennett.

Zora’s character is tasked with a high-stakes mission: leading a specialized team into isolated tropical regions to secure genetic material from the world’s three largest remaining dinosaurs. Unlike previous entries that focused on park management or global outbreaks, Rebirth is being described as a “gritty, survivalist thriller” that returns the franchise to its suspenseful roots.

Universal Pictures is sparing no expense to ensure this new trilogy launch finds its footing. The production has assembled a “dream team” of sci-fi and action veterans:

• Director Gareth Edwards: Known for the visual spectacle of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla (2014), Edwards is expected to bring a sense of scale and realism back to the creatures.

• Writer David Koepp: In a full-circle moment for the franchise, the original screenwriter of Steven Spielberg’s 1993 Jurassic Park has returned to pen the script for Rebirth.

• The Cast: Joining Johansson in the expedition are Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali and Bridgerton star Jonathan Bailey.

Principal photography is scheduled to begin in September 2026. Production insiders have hinted at a global shoot that will utilize the lush jungles of Thailand, the historic architecture of Malta, and specialized soundstages in the United Kingdom.

The “Fall 2026” start date puts the film on track for a high-profile July 2027 theatrical release. This timeline allows for an extensive post-production period, ensuring that the visual effects led by the legendary ILM live up to the franchise’s groundbreaking standards.

Following the mixed critical reception of 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, the studio opted for a complete creative reset. By moving away from the “dinosaurs among us” suburban setting and returning to the isolation of tropical islands, Jurassic World Rebirth aims to recapture the awe and terror that made the original 1993 film a cultural phenomenon.

With Scarlett Johansson at the helm, the franchise isn’t just surviving it’s evolving.
