The acting community is mourning the loss of veteran performer Rif Hutton, a familiar face across decades of television and film. Hutton passed away on Saturday, April 18, 2026, at his home in Pasadena, California, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 73 years old. The Rif Hutton cause of death has been confirmed by his family as a more than year-long battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Hutton was perhaps most recognizable to audiences for his recurring role as Dr. Ron Welch on the hit medical dramedy Doogie Howser, M.D. appearing alongside Neil Patrick Harris throughout the show’s four-season run from 1989 to 1993.

• JAG: He played the recurring role of Lieutenant Commander Alan Mattoni from 1997 to 2001.

• Soap Operas: He was a staple in daytime television with roles on The Bold and the Beautiful and General Hospital, where he most recently played Lenny Caulfield.

• Sitcoms: His credits spanned classics like The Jeffersons, Married… with Children, and The Wayans Bros.

Beyond his live-action roles, Hutton was a prolific and highly respected voice actor. His vocal talents contributed to some of the most successful animated films of the modern era, including:

• Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

• The Princess and the Frog

• Shrek

• Ice Age: Collision Course

He also became a pop-culture fixture in the 1990s as the face of KFC commercials, portraying the fictional restaurant owner Russ Beeler.

Following his diagnosis in March 2025, Hutton became an advocate for those facing similar health battles. He often spoke about the importance of being “surrounded by encouragement, by prayer, and by stalwart champions of hope and light.”

Fellow voice actor Steve Apostolina paid tribute to Hutton on social media, calling him “one of a kind” and a “remarkable human being.” Apostolina added, “Rif Hutton was a man of action. He inspired so many and leaves behind a legion of loyal admirers.”

Rif Hutton is survived by his wife, actress Bridget Hoffman, and their son, Wolfy. His final projects and the immense body of work he leaves behind serve as a testament to a career defined by versatility, kindness, and professional excellence.
