For Nigerian singer Niniola, independence is the ultimate power move. Despite tempting offers from record labels, the Maradona hitmaker has remained steadfast as an independent artist for over a decade, prioritizing her creative freedom and business acumen over industry pressure.
In a recent chat with TVC, Niniola shared her reasons for choosing the indie path, explaining how she values the ability to shape her music without interference.
There are pros and cons of signing with a record label
she said.
I’ve seen the business side of music that many don’t pay attention to because they’re solely focused on making songs. For me, being independent allows me to control my creativity and make decisions that align with my vision.
The Afro-house queen revealed that her journey began with skepticism. After the success of her debut single, a record label approached her with a deal, but she hesitated.
At the time, nobody was doing Afro-house, and I didn’t want anyone dictating my style. Signing with a label often means giving up some control because they’re financing your career, but I wasn’t ready to compromise my sound.
Niniola’s decision to stay independent wasn’t just about music; it was also about freedom and authenticity. “Creative freedom is one of the major pros of being an indie artist,” she emphasized.
I get to explore and express myself without constraints.
While fans know Niniola as a powerhouse on stage, she disclosed a lesser-known side of herself.
“I’m actually an introvert,” she confessed, “but music brings out the extrovert in me.”
Her journey as an independent artist has been an inspiration, proving that staying true to yourself can be just as rewarding as signing big contracts. Niniola’s story is a reminder that passion, purpose, and creative freedom can lead to lasting success in the ever-competitive music industry.
