Ecuadorian international and LDU Quito midfielder, Marco Angulo, has tragically passed away at the age of 22, a month after being critically injured in a car crash. His club confirmed his death, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of a promising player who had touched many lives in his brief career.
The car accident took place on October 7 in southern Quito, Ecuador’s capital. Since the incident, Angulo had been hospitalized, undergoing multiple surgeries and spending over a week in intensive care. Despite extensive medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Monday night.
In a statement, LDU Quito shared: “With deep sorrow and sadness, we regret to have to inform you of the death of our dear player Marco Angulo. His passing is an irreparable loss which will leave an indelible mark in our hearts.” Angulo joined the club on loan from MLS club FC Cincinnati in March and had made 16 appearances for LDU Quito, his last game taking place just a day before the accident.
Angulo made his debut for the Ecuadorian national team in November 2022, appearing in a 0-0 draw against Iraq. He earned three caps for his country and was known for his dedication and team spirit. The Ecuadorian Football Association also paid tribute, stating, “Marco was not only an outstanding player but also a great team-mate. He leaves a deep sorrow in our hearts.”
Ecuadorian reports revealed that Independiente del Valle footballer Roberto Cabezas and another individual, Victor Carcopa, also lost their lives in the accident. Two additional passengers were in the vehicle, but their conditions remain unknown.
Our condolences go out to Angulo’s family, friends, and teammates as they mourn his loss.
