A Turkish court has sentenced Faruk Koca, former president of Ankaragucu, to three years and seven months in prison following a violent assault on referee Halil Umut Meler. The incident occurred after a heated Super Lig match between Ankaragucu and Caykur Rizespor in December 2023, which ended in a tense 1-1 draw after a last-minute equalizer by Rizespor.

The Incident and Its Aftermath

As emotions ran high after the game, Koca reportedly approached Meler and punched him, resulting in a minor fracture near the referee’s eye. The shocking event, which drew swift condemnation from both domestic and international football communities, led to Koca’s conviction for “intentionally wounding a public official.” He was also found guilty of issuing threats and violating sports violence prevention laws, although these additional sentences were suspended.

The Turkish Football Federation reacted strongly, suspending all league games for several weeks. Ankaragucu faced further repercussions, receiving a two-million Turkish Lira fine (about £45,000) and being ordered to play five matches without fans. The incident contributed to the club’s relegation from the top division, and Koca resigned shortly thereafter.

Legal Fallout and Broader Impact

Alongside Koca, three other individuals involved in the attack received sentences ranging from one to five years. Koca, however, plans to appeal the ruling, leaving the case pending further review. The attack has intensified discussions around violence in sports, with calls for stricter measures to protect match officials and uphold the integrity of the game.

The altercation serves as a stark reminder of the critical need for respect and accountability in sports. As Ankaragucu navigates its future in the lower division, the repercussions of this incident continue to loom over Turkish football, highlighting the urgency of addressing and curbing aggression against referees.
