Christopher Nolan’s epic adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek classic has officially become the highest-grossing IMAX film in history. The achievement marks another milestone for a director who has become synonymous with the premium large-format experience.
On its fourth weekend in theaters, The Odyssey reached a cumulative global IMAX gross of $289 million, surpassing the previous record holder, James Cameron’s *Avatar* (2009), which earned approximately $270 million on IMAX screens throughout its entire run. The film hit this milestone in record time, thanks in part to its unique status as the first movie ever to be shot entirely on IMAX film cameras.
The success on IMAX has been driven by an extraordinary hunger from audiences for the premium format. During its opening weekend alone, the film earned $52 million from IMAX screens worldwide, accounting for 20% of its global debut. It has since generated multiple $50 million-plus global weekends in IMAX, a feat no other release has managed to achieve on more than two consecutive weekends.
With its IMAX run extended through at least mid-September and major market debuts still ahead in China and Japan, The Odyssey is expected to widen the gap even further over the coming weeks.
