Luigi Mangione Withdraws Emotional Disturbance Defense, Plans to Revive Later

In a surprising courtroom twist, Luigi Mangione has temporarily backed off the defense strategy his lawyers unveiled just yesterday. The man accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson is no longer pursuing the psychiatric defense, at least for now. But sources close to the case tell TMZ this is a calculated legal move, not a permanent shift.

Just Wednesday, the judge in Mangione’s New York State murder trial revealed that his lawyers were mounting a novel defense called Extreme Emotional Disturbance. The strategy aimed to argue that Mangione’s obsession with corporate greed created an altered mental state, leading him to believe he was firing the gun to “save humanity.” If successful, the defense would have reduced the murder charge to manslaughter.

However, on Thursday, the defense team withdrew that argument. The reason? Sources say today is the deadline for the defense to turn over records of Mangione’s psychiatric history to prosecutors. By pulling the defense now, the team doesn’t have to hand over those documents just yet. They’re reportedly conducting more psychological evaluations and don’t want to show their hand until closer to trial.

Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel on December 4, 2025. The attack, which appeared targeted and premeditated, sparked a massive manhunt that ended with his arrest at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania days later. He was found with a firearm, a silencer, a passport, and a handwritten manifesto criticizing the health insurance industry.

The case has drawn intense public interest, with Mangione becoming an unlikely folk hero to some who share his frustration with the healthcare system. His trial is set to begin in early September. The extreme emotional disturbance defense could be revived as the date approaches, once the defense team is ready to share their full psychiatric findings.
