Illbliss Apology: Rapper Says Sorry Over Lagos Land Comments

Nigerian rapper Tobechukwu Ejiofor, known as Illbliss, has issued a public apology following backlash over his controversial remarks about Igbo land ownership in Lagos. The Illbliss apology came after a heated exchange on X over the weekend.

The controversy began when the rapper stated that Igbos have contributed immensely to Lagos’s economy, particularly in commerce and real estate. When an X user responded with a derogatory comment suggesting Igbos return to their “erosion-filled land,” Illbliss fired back.

The rapper’s now-deleted response read: “We bought all your land and will resell to you”. The comment quickly drew criticism from users who accused him of making inflammatory statements capable of fueling ethnic tensions.

In his public apology shared on Instagram, Illbliss explained his state of mind during the exchange. “A bunch of derogatory tweets responded in attack asking we should vacate Lagos and return to our erosion-filled land. I was upset,” he wrote.

The rapper admitted his response was brash and acknowledged that his words may have offended many.

“I apologize if you found my comments brash,” the Illbliss apology statement read. “It wasn’t intended to tarnish Lagos, a state that has accommodated us all and supported our art, our business, and our growth for many years” .

The rapper noted that he has always been troubled by hostility toward Igbos whenever discussions about their contributions to development outside the South-East arise. He emphasized that Lagos remains home to many Nigerians, including Igbos, and should be treated with respect.

“We live here and it’s our home, and we will always treat it as such,” he concluded.
