Olivia Rodrigo just made chart history. “drop dead,” the lead single from her upcoming third studio album, has officially debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The achievement marks her fourth career number one and places her in a category all her own.
With this debut, Rodrigo becomes the first artist ever to have the lead singles from her first three albums all enter the Hot 100 at the top spot. Olivia Rodrigo’s drop dead follows “drivers license” (2021) from SOUR and “vampire” (2023) from GUTS, both of which also debuted at number one.
No other artist in Billboard history has accomplished this trifecta. While acts like Mariah Carey, Drake, and Taylor Swift have accumulated multiple number-one debuts, none have achieved it consecutively across their first three album cycles as the lead single each time.
“Dropping a new song is always terrifying because you never know how people will react,” Rodrigo said in a brief statement following the chart news. “But seeing how ‘drop dead’ has connected with so many of you makes me want to cry in the best way.”
“drop dead” arrived on April 17 with no advance warning. The track features Rodrigo’s signature blend of raw vulnerability and biting wit, produced once again by longtime collaborator Dan Nigro . Lyrically, the song addresses watching someone self-destruct while feeling powerless to stop it, a thematic cousin to GUTS standout “making the bed” but with a darker, more resigned delivery.
The music video, directed by Petra Collins, has already surpassed 50 million views on YouTube. It opens with Rodrigo in a hospital waiting room before cutting to surreal sequences of her floating through empty hallways and sitting alone in a parked car as rain floods the windows.
Rodrigo’s third album is expected later this fall, though no official release date or title has been announced. She will headline the Glastonbury Festival in June, where she is widely expected to debut more new material. For now, “drop dead” continues its reign at streaming services worldwide, and the history books have a new entry.
