Ye Concert Ban: France Explores Legal Block of Marseille Show

The French government is moving to silence the stage. A Ye concert ban is under active consideration, with Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez exploring “all possibilities” to block the rapper’s only French performance, scheduled for June 11 at Marseille’s Vélodrome stadium.

Nuñez confirmed Tuesday that his office is examining legal avenues to prohibit the show, citing Ye’s long history of antisemitic remarks and public admiration for Adolf Hitler. The minister has already discussed the potential prohibition with the regional prefect and Marseille’s mayor. If successful, France would join the United Kingdom, which barred Ye from entering the country earlier in April.

The proposed Marseille concert blocked status has vocal support from local leadership. Socialist Mayor Benoît Payan declared in early March that Ye was “not welcome” in the Mediterranean city. His words were blunt: “I refuse to let Marseille be a showcase for those who promote hatred and unabashed Nazism”.

The mayor’s stance reflects a broader European pushback against the 48-year-old rapper, who released a song titled “Heil Hitler” in May 2025 and marketed swastika-printed T-shirts on his website . While Ye later apologized in a Wall Street Journal letter, attributing his behavior to bipolar disorder, the damage to his reputation—and touring prospects—has proven severe.

French law complicates any ban. According to the country’s highest administrative court, local authorities can only prohibit a concert under strict conditions: statements at the event must risk constituting a criminal offense, and public order must be threatened . Organizing agency Mars 360 has attempted to preempt government action, inserting specific clauses into the concert contract “to ensure that no illegal remarks are made during the concert and that French law is fully respected”.

Nuñez has not yet issued a final ruling. His office continues to review legal options, and a decision is expected before ticket sales begin. The Vélodrome show remains Ye’s sole French date on his global “Ye Live Concert Tour” . Meanwhile, the rapper still plans to perform in Spain on July 30 at Madrid’s Riyadh Air Metropolitano stadium .

For Marseille, the message is clear. The stage is booked. The welcome mat is not.
