The speculation began circulating after anonymous sources claimed festival organizers had approached SZA’s team with a standby agreement. The narrative quickly gained traction online, with some suggesting the SOS singer was waiting in the wings should Bieber’s well-documented health struggles force a last-minute cancellation.
The SZA denies Bieber backup rumors response was swift and unambiguous.
SZA did not let the rumor breathe for long. She posted a direct denial on her Instagram story, making it clear she found the suggestion offensive.
“I was never hired as a replacement or a ‘just in case’ for anyone,” she wrote. “I don’t stand in shadows. I don’t wait for calls. I make my own moments.”
The singer went on to explain that her Coachella appearance was planned independently and that she had been in talks with the festival for months about her own set. Any suggestion that she was an understudy, she implied, diminished her own accomplishments as a headlining act in her own right.
The speculation did not emerge from nowhere. Justin Bieber has been open about his ongoing health challenges, including his Ramsay Hunt syndrome diagnosis that caused facial paralysis in 2022. He has also spoken about mental health struggles that have led him to step back from touring at various points.
Coachella organizers have historically kept contingency plans for headliners. When Kanye West dropped out in 2022, the festival scrambled to replace him. The idea that they would have a safety net for Bieber, given his history, was not entirely implausible to some observers.
But SZA made it clear that she was not that safety net.
