The British spy thriller genre just gained a new powerhouse. Damson Idris has officially expanded his role in Netflix’s upcoming series The Lords’ Day, signing on as both lead actor and executive producer. The six-episode adaptation of Michael Dobbs’ political thriller novel follows Harry Jones, a British spy trapped inside Parliament during the State Opening.

Production sources confirm Idris will now have creative oversight beyond his on-screen performance. The move signals Netflix’s confidence in the Snowfall star, whose career has accelerated rapidly since that series ended. For the British spy thriller space, his dual role brings fresh energy to a genre often dominated by older archetypes.

The entire series takes place during a single day. On the State Opening of Parliament, something goes catastrophically wrong. A lockdown traps every politician, staffer, and security agent inside the building. Among them is Harry Jones, a British spy who realizes the threat isn’t outside, it’s already in the room with him.

Shifting loyalties become the primary weapon. Allies reveal hidden agendas. Enemies suddenly offer help. Jones cannot trust anyone, including the people he swore to protect. The pressure escalates minute by minute as he races to prevent an unspecified catastrophe.

Idris built his reputation playing Franklin Saint, a quiet but lethal drug dealer navigating Los Angeles during the 1980s crack epidemic. That performance required restraint, sudden violence, and moral ambiguity—all essential traits for a British spy working inside a political powder keg.

As executive producer, Idris will influence casting, tone, and creative decisions across all six episodes. For a British spy thriller that leans heavily on tension rather than action, having an actor-producer who understands slow-burn storytelling changes the final product.

Filming is scheduled to begin later this year. No official release date has been announced, but industry tracking suggests a late 2026 or early 2027 premiere. Michael Dobbs, author of the original novel and creator of House of Cards, remains involved as a creative consultant.

For fans of political thrillers and lockdown tension, The Lords’ Day offers something unusual: a British spy who cannot run, cannot hide, and cannot call for backup. Harry Jones has six hours and six episodes. Whether he survives either remains unclear.
