Perry arrived at the airport around midday and personally distributed the envelopes to officers working security checkpoints throughout the terminal. The surprise left many in tears.
Perry has a long history of showing up for Atlanta’s essential workers. He previously covered layaway balances at Walmart, paid for seniors’ groceries, and donated millions to COVID-19 relief efforts in his adopted hometown.
Friday’s gesture was no different. The filmmaker wanted to acknowledge the often-overlooked work TSA officers do daily, the early mornings, the holiday shifts, the steady presence that travelers rarely think twice about until something goes wrong.
In his own words, Perry said the officers handle “so much that people don’t see.” He wanted them to know their work matters.
Atlanta has become Perry’s creative home base. His sprawling Tyler Perry Studios sits on what was once a Confederate Army base, and he has built much of his philanthropic identity around supporting the city that helped build his empire.
