Scottish newcomer Dominic McLaughlin steps into the iconic role of Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The young cast, selected from over 30,000 applicants, makes their debut in the trailer with brief but promising glimpses.
They are supported by a heavyweight adult ensemble. John Lithgow brings gravitas to Albus Dumbledore, while Paapa Essiedu takes on the complex role of Severus Snape. Janet McTeer portrays Minerva McGonagall, and Nick Frost steps in as the beloved Rubeus Hagrid. The trailer offers quick cuts of each, from Dumbledore’s half-moon spectacles to Hagrid making a snow angel outside the Hogwarts gates.
Unlike the films, which compressed the novels into roughly two hours each, HBO’s series plans to dedicate an entire season to each book. The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (dropping the Americanized “Sorcerer’s” for a more book-accurate title), will span eight episodes.
The trailer hints at this expanded scope. New scenes show Harry at Muggle school facing off with Dudley, Hagrid navigating the London Underground, and extended moments in the Gryffindor common room and Herbology greenhouses. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, known for Succession, appear to be aiming for a textured, grounded aesthetic that allows the story room to breathe.
As expected, the trailer has split the fandom. Within hours, it had generated over three million YouTube views and sparked heated debate across social media .
Some viewers celebrated the return of the magical world. “The magic is back, I feel like I’m 10 years old again,” one fan posted . Others praised the series’ potential to include details the films omitted, with one joking it already looks “so book accurate”.
But criticism has been equally vocal. The cooler, grey-blue color grading has drawn sharp comparisons to the warmer tones of Chris Columbus’s original film. “The new HP looks depressing and has the colour palette of Deathly Hallows,” one user wrote . Another joked: “They need to turn the lights on”.
Casting has also become a flashpoint. Essiedu’s portrayal of Snape, while more age-accurate to the books—has faced scrutiny from fans who grew up with Alan Rickman’s iconic performance . Essiedu has reportedly received death threats from online trolls, prompting HBO to “reinforce security” on set.
The series is currently in production at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the same UK facility where the original films were made . HBO has confirmed a Christmas 2026 premiere, positioning the show as a major holiday event.
J.K. Rowling serves as an executive producer alongside longtime franchise producer David Heyman. Despite ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling’s public statements, the production has moved forward with a full eight-episode first season, with plans for seven seasons in total adapting all the books.
For a generation that grew up with Daniel Radcliffe’s Harry, the new series represents a gamble: a chance to revisit beloved stories in greater depth, or an unnecessary remake of something that already felt complete. Whatever the verdict, Hogwarts is open again, and millions are already lining up to return.
