Dearest gentle reader, the next chapter of the ton’s most beloved saga has been revealed. Netflix has officially confirmed that Bridgerton Season 5 will center on the love story of Francesca Bridgerton and Michaela Stirling, marking the first time a same-gender romance will take center stage in the hit period drama.

The announcement arrived Tuesday with a first-look teaser shared across Netflix’s social media platforms, accompanied by the caption: “Do not fret, dearest readers, for a certain countess shall find love again… Bridgerton Season 5 is now in production”. The eight-episode season has begun filming in the UK, with production set to explore new locations beyond London, including the Scottish Highlands, which will play a vital role in Francesca’s emotional journey.

Season 5 picks up two years after the devastating death of Francesca’s first husband, John Stirling (Victor Alli), which unfolded in Season 4. Francesca, portrayed by Hannah Dodd, decides to re-enter the marriage mart, but for practical reasons rather than romantic ones. Her plans are upended when John’s cousin, Michaela Stirling (Masali Baduza), returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate.

What begins as a bond rooted in shared grief slowly transforms into something deeper. Netflix’s official description notes that as Michaela stirs up new feelings inside her, Francesca “will make discoveries about herself that could change everything”.

Hannah Dodd, who stepped into the role of Francesca in Season 3, described her character as “reserved and contained,” someone who has “long felt out of place in the world”. Masali Baduza, a South African actress who first appeared as Michaela in Season 3, brings to life a character described as charming and vivacious on the surface but vulnerable underneath, someone “quick to run the second she feels discomfort”.

The decision to make Francesca and Michaela’s romance the central storyline represents a significant milestone for Bridgerton. While the show has featured queer characters before, including Benedict Bridgerton’s bisexuality, this marks the first time a same-gender relationship will serve as the season’s primary focus.

Showrunner Jess Brownell, who took over from creator Chris Van Dusen, has been vocal about her commitment to inclusive storytelling. “I feel like Bridgerton made its name in many ways on being an inclusive universe, and for queer stories to be left out of that would not feel right,” she told Out magazine earlier this year. In a separate statement, Brownell added: “To make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge”.

The storyline diverges from Julia Quinn’s source material. In the sixth novel of the series, When He Was Wicked, Francesca’s love interest is Michael Stirling, a male character. The gender swap, which first teased audiences when Michaela appeared in Season 3, has generated both excitement and controversy among fans.

Masali Baduza addressed the significance of the storyline, telling Tudum: “What we really want to achieve is giving a realistic view of queer love onscreen and (giving them) a happily ever after”.

The fifth season will explore Francesca and Michaela’s connection against the backdrop of the Kilmartin estate in Scotland. Hannah Dodd told Refinery29 that the “rolling green of the Highlands plays a vital role in Francesca’s emotional journey”.

The core Bridgerton cast is expected to return, including Claudia Jessie as Eloise, Nicola Coughlan as Penelope, Luke Newton as Colin, Golda Rosheuvel as Queen Charlotte, and Adjoa Andoh as Lady Danbury. While many fans anticipated Eloise’s love story would be next, following the book order, showrunner Brownell confirmed that both Eloise and Francesca will have their seasons in Season 5 and the already-renewed Season 6, with Francesca taking the lead first.

Netflix has not yet announced a premiere date for Bridgerton Season 5. Given the show’s production timeline, approximately eight months of filming followed by extensive post-production and dubbing, industry observers estimate a release window in late 2027. Showrunner Jess Brownell has acknowledged the long wait times between seasons, noting the team is working to speed up the process but remains committed to quality.

For now, fans can savor the news that Francesca’s long-awaited turn in the spotlight has finally arrived, with a love story that promises to redefine what happily ever after can look like in the world of Bridgerton.
