Scott Patterson Breaks Silence on Sullivan’s Crossing Exit

The truth is finally out. Scott Patterson, who played the beloved Harry “Sully” Sullivan for three seasons on the hit drama Sullivan’s Crossing, has broken his silence about his shocking departure from the series. And his version of events tells a very different story from what fans initially heard.

The 67-year-old actor, best known for playing Luke Danes on Gilmore Girls, confirmed he will not appear in the upcoming fourth season of the CW drama, which premieres April 20 before streaming on Netflix. But Patterson wants fans to know one thing clearly: he wasn’t pushed out. He walked away.

After days of speculation following his absence from the Season 4 trailer and promotional materials, Patterson took to social media to set the record straight. The Scott Patterson Sullivan’s Crossing exit explained itself through his own words: irreconcilable creative differences over the direction of his character.

“Every actor knows what it’s like to fall in love with a character and a story. I fell in love with Sully and have nothing but fondness for him,” Patterson wrote. “The creative differences were becoming untenable, and I just sadly realized that the show was not something that I could agree to continue”.

The statement directly contradicted the narrative that had been circulating just hours earlier.

The confusion began when showrunner Roma Roth addressed Patterson’s absence in a statement to Us Weekly. She explained that Season 3 ended with Sully leaving for Ireland to begin a new chapter, and Season 4 picks up the next day with the character still overseas.

“While he isn’t physically present in this season, the character remains an important part of the world with the potential to be included in future seasons should that align with the ongoing creative,” Roth said.

But Patterson pushed back forcefully against any implication that the show moved on without him. “It’s unfortunate that it is now being implied that they moved on from me/Sully when the fact is the complete opposite, and those who sadly already have spoken out are also fully aware of this fact and yet chose to say otherwise”.

According to sources who spoke with Deadline, Patterson had actually requested to be released from his contract after Season 3 due to concerns about his character’s trajectory, a request that was granted. When approached about a potential Season 5 return, no formal offer ever materialized, and Roth issued her statement without warning.

At the heart of the dispute lies Patterson’s deep connection to the character as envisioned in Robyn Carr’s original book series, which also spawned Virgin River. Patterson felt the adaptation wasn’t serving the multi-layered complexity that book fans knew and loved.

“I really enjoyed Sully and fought for his voice and his character,” he emphasized. “The richness and depth of Sully, whom the fans of the books all know and love, is so multi-layered and interesting”.

His frustration stemmed from a desire to honor both the source material and the audience who made the show a hit. “The fans deserved better than to think the embodiment of this character, me, would just disrespect not only the show, but them”.

Patterson concluded his statement with a reminder of what ultimately matters: “In the end, we’re all fans of these characters and stories, and I’ll always support and defend the truth”.

Season 4 will proceed without its titular character, focusing instead on Maggie Sullivan (Morgan Kohan) as her life at the Crossing finally takes shape. She has decided on a new direction for her career and renewed her commitment to Cal Jones (Chad Michael Murray).

But complications arise when Maggie’s ex-husband Liam, played by Marcus Rosner, arrives with a shocking revelation that upends everything and forces Cal to question whether Maggie can ever truly leave her past behind.

The season premieres March 22 on CTV in Canada and April 20 on The CW in the United States. Whether Sully will ever return remains an open question, one that now depends on creative alignment Patterson made clear he no longer shares.

For fans who fell in love with the grumpy-but-tender campground owner, the door may never fully close. But Patterson’s statement makes one thing certain: if Sully does come back, it won’t be because the actor abandoned the role. It will be because someone finally listened to what he was fighting for all along.
