Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale spent Thursday morning in Miami-Dade County custody after a celebration turned into a criminal investigation. The four-time WNBA All-Star was arrested at 4:20 a.m. at E11EVEN Miami, a high-profile nightclub, and charged with misdemeanor battery following an alleged physical altercation.

Ogunbowale posted a $1,000 bond and was released Thursday. The incident came just hours after she scored 19 points to lead her team, Mist, to an 80-74 victory over Phantom in the Unrivaled championship game, a moment that should have been pure celebration.

According to the arrest affidavit, Ogunbowale punched a man in the face with a closed fist, knocking him to the ground. Miami-Dade police report that security cameras captured the entire incident, and the footage corroborated the alleged victim’s account.

Some reports initially identified the man as a security staffer who was escorting Ogunbowale out of the club following an unrelated, separate altercation. When approached by police at the scene, the alleged victim identified Ogunbowale, and she was taken into custody without further incident.

Both the WNBA and Unrivaled moved quickly to acknowledge the situation without offering detailed comment.

“The league is aware of an incident involving Arike Ogunbowale and we are in the process of gathering additional information,” Unrivaled spokesperson Tish Carmona said in a statement. “We’re in contact with Arike and her representatives”.

The Dallas Wings, Ogunbowale’s WNBA franchise since she entered the league in 2019, issued a nearly identical response. “The Wings are aware of an incident involving Arike Ogunbowale and are in the process of gathering more information. Further comments will be provided once we have more details”.

Excel Management, which represents Ogunbowale, has not responded to requests for comment.

The night started as a coronation. Ogunbowale and her Mist teammates had just clinched the Unrivaled title in the league’s second season. Social media videos showed her celebrating at E11EVEN with teammates, including Paige Bueckers and Aziaha James. The club had hosted the official Unrivaled championship after-party and later confirmed its role in the night’s events while declining to comment on Ogunbowale specifically.

The arrest comes just days after the U.S. men’s hockey team celebrated its gold-medal Olympic win at the same venue, underscoring E11EVEN’s status as Miami’s go-to spot for athlete celebrations.

Ogunbowale now faces a first-degree misdemeanor battery charge, a legal situation that adds uncertainty to an already complicated professional moment. She is currently an unrestricted free agent as WNBA Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiations continue this spring. Her next contract, whether with Dallas or another franchise, will now be negotiated against the backdrop of an open criminal case.

For a player who has spent all seven seasons of her WNBA career with the Wings, averaging 19.9 points and 4.0 assists per game while earning four All-Star selections and two All-Star Game MVP awards, Thursday morning’s arrest marks an unexpected detour.

An Unrivaled spokesperson offered one brief update: Ogunbowale is “home safely”. Beyond that, the silence from her camp speaks volumes. The cameras that captured her championship triumph Wednesday night also captured her arrest hours later. And that footage, unlike the celebration videos, won’t be shared by her teammates.
