She’s duetted with Beyoncé and Dolly Parton. Now Miley Cyrus has added another icon to her list of famous collaborators: Elmo. The Grammy-winning artist is guest-starring in the new season of Sesame Street, and fans got their first look at the sing-along in a trailer released earlier this month.

The Miley Cyrus Sesame Street guest appearance will air as part of Volume 2 of the show’s reimagined 56th season, which premieres Monday, March 9, on Netflix and PBS Kids. The new batch includes four 30-minute episodes featuring the pop star in an episode titled “Elmo’s Toy Swap”.

In the trailer, Cyrus is greeted warmly by Elmo, who exclaims, “Hi, Miss Miley! Elmo’s so happy to see you!”. The scene shows Cyrus surrounded by beloved Muppets, including Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, Rosita, and Grover. Holding a sparkly high heel aloft with a big grin, she tells the group, “Imagine what we can do with this!”

The episode follows Elmo as he eagerly swaps toys with his friends but struggles when he sees them playing with his items differently than he used to. He ultimately learns that there’s no wrong way to play, with special guest Miley Cyrus stopping by the Sesame Street swap to help deliver the lesson.

Beyond her appearance, Cyrus also performs an original song during her visit, adding to the episode’s musical appeal.

Volume 2 of Sesame Street Season 56 consists of four episodes, each running 30 minutes and designed for young viewers with interactive, immersive storytelling. The full lineup includes:

Elmo’s Toy Swap: Elmo exchanges toys with friends but gets angry when they play differently than he expects. Miley Cyrus stops by the swap to help him learn about flexibility and creativity.

Abby’s Magical Dragons: Abby cares for three musical dragons but makes a bedtime routine mistake that wakes them up. Feeling overwhelmed, she asks friends to play a lullaby to restore calm.

Elmo’s Awesome Bike: Elmo gets his first bike but feels jealous when he sees Abby’s flying bike. Through a “heart breath,” he learns to appreciate what he has.

Elmo and the Great Cookie Stack: Elmo and friends attempt to build a record-breaking cookie tower. When repeated setbacks discourage him, he finds another way to contribute to the team.

Cyrus joins an impressive lineage of music legends who have visited Sesame Street over its 56-year history. The show has previously welcomed Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, and more recently Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, and Katy Perry. For Cyrus, who grew up as a child performer on Disney’s Hannah Montana, the appearance represents a full-circle moment, returning to children’s television as a guest rather than a star-in-training.

Sesame Street Volume 2 will be available starting March 9 on Netflix and PBS Kids. This marks the first time the beloved children’s series is available on Netflix in more than 30 languages, expanding its global reach significantly. The 56th season is structured in three volumes, allowing families to engage with the series in smaller bursts rather than a single binge release .

The series is produced by Sesame Workshop, with Sal Perez serving as executive producer and Halcyon Person joining as head writer and co-executive producer. Person, an Emmy, Humanitas, and NAACP Award nominee, previously worked on Netflix’s Karma’s World and Dee & Friends in Oz.

For Cyrus fans and Sesame Street lovers alike, the collaboration promises to deliver the same gentle humor and timeless lessons that have made the show a staple for generations, now with a pop star touch.
