The wait is officially over for fans of one of Netflix’s biggest thrillers. The streaming giant has renewed The Night Agent for a fourth season, just weeks after Season 3 premiered on February 19. Gabriel Basso will return as FBI agent Peter Sutherland for another high-stakes mission, with production relocating from New York to Los Angeles following a major tax credit approval.
The Night Agent Season 4 Netflix renewal comes after months of speculation and preparation behind the scenes. Showrunner Shawn Ryan confirmed the news in a statement, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to continue Peter Sutherland’s journey. “It’s been a wild ride filming The Night Agent in five countries across three continents to this point, and we’re so thrilled that the adventures of Peter Sutherland will continue into Season 4,” Ryan said. “Our writers, our cast, and our crew stand ready to answer the call to bring our incredible fans even more twists, turns, and thrills”.
The fourth season will mark a significant geographical shift for the series. After filming Season 1 in Vancouver and Seasons 2 and 3 in New York, production is relocating to Los Angeles. The move comes after Sony Pictures Television secured $31.6 million in California tax credits in November 2025, representing approximately 40% of qualified production expenditures.
The tax credit comes with a six-month window to begin production, meaning filming must commence by May 2026 to secure the incentive. This timeline puts the series on track for a 2027 release, maintaining the accelerated production schedule Ryan has prioritized.
Ryan explained the creative reasoning behind the move: “There’s a world that we’re in, it’s a world that exists in Los Angeles, which is the creative reason why we moved the show to Los Angeles, because it’s a world that is present in Los Angeles, it’s not present in New York for the most part”. He clarified that Peter Sutherland won’t be heading to Hollywood specifically, teasing “something in the Los Angeles region that exists at a much bigger level than New York”.
Unlike the early renewal for Season 3, which came three and a half months before Season 2 even premiered Netflix took a more cautious approach this time, waiting to gauge Season 3’s performance before committing. However, Ryan revealed that a writer’s room had been quietly operating since 2025, ensuring development never stalled.
“We’ve been working for a while on the storyline. We have some scripts, we are breaking stories,” Ryan told Deadline in February, before the official renewal. “To Netflix’s credit, they want to make sure that the creative side of things is always buttoned up before committing that amount of money.”
While plot details remain under wraps, Ryan confirmed that “there is no international location planned at the beginning of season 4,” breaking from the pattern of previous seasons that opened with overseas missions. The focus will instead center on Los Angeles, with the showrunner teasing new characters and a fresh direction.
“I don’t want to say anything other than it’s a new character that we’ve never met before,” Ryan said about Peter’s potential new partner. Each season of The Night Agent generally stands on its own, sending Peter on a new mission with new allies and enemies, and Season 4 will follow that template.
Gabriel Basso will undoubtedly return as Peter Sutherland, the show simply wouldn’t exist without him. Other potential returning cast members include Albert Jones as Deputy Director Aiden Mosley, Fola Evans-Akingbola as Secret Service Agent Chelsea Arrington, and David Lyons as Adam Corrigan. However, Ryan has been careful not to confirm any returns until scripts are finalized.
“I have an idea of which characters would return, but certainly, until there’s actually an official pickup, there’s no reason to go into it,” Ryan said before the renewal. “I want to get further into the creative of the season to make sure that what we start with is what we want to finish with”.
With production expected to begin by mid-2026, Season 4 will likely arrive on Netflix sometime in 2027. Ryan has prioritized maintaining a yearly cadence for the series, noting that the 22-month gap between Seasons 1 and 2 was an anomaly caused by the writers’ strike. Season 3 arrived less than 13 months after Season 2, and the goal is to keep that momentum going.
For now, fans can stream all three seasons of The Night Agent on Netflix while they wait for Peter Sutherland’s next mission.
