Patriots Release Stefon Diggs After Contract Restructure Rejection

The Stefon Diggs era in New England is over after just one season. The Patriots have informed the four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver that he will be released when the new league year begins next week, a decision triggered by his refusal to restructure a contract that carried a $26.5 million cap hit for 2026.

Diggs joined the Patriots last offseason on a three-year, $69 million deal after spending 2024 with the Houston Texans. He delivered immediately, recording 85 receptions for 1,013 yards and four touchdowns while helping lead New England to its first Super Bowl appearance since 2019. But the financial math never added up. When the Patriots proposed revising his deal to lower the massive cap number, Diggs declined. That refusal sealed his fate.

The 32-year-old receiver became the Patriots’ first 1,000-yard wideout in six years, providing veteran reliability and third-down production that stabilized the entire offense. He developed immediate chemistry with quarterback Drake Maye, who finished as runner-up for the AP NFL MVP award. Together, they transformed a passing attack that ranked last in the NFL in 2024 into the league’s fourth-most productive unit in 2025.

Yet Diggs’ production came with volatility. He posted fewer than 50 receiving yards in 10 of 17 regular-season games, including eight games under 40 yards. In four playoff games, he managed just 110 total yards. The Patriots ultimately fell to the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

Diggs’ contract called for his cap number to balloon from $10.5 million to $26.5 million in 2026 . With $6 million of his $20.6 million salary set to become fully guaranteed on March 13, the Patriots faced a deadline. They proposed a restructure. Diggs said no.

The decision to release him clears approximately $16.8 million in cap space, leaving the Patriots with roughly $55 million to spend in free agency. The move comes with a $9.7 million dead cap charge but ultimately gives New England financial flexibility it desperately needed.

The separation also removes a legal distraction. Diggs pleaded not guilty in February to felony strangulation and misdemeanor assault charges stemming from a December altercation with his former live-in chef. He is due back in court April 1.

Despite the split, Diggs expressed gratitude to the organization and its fans. On Instagram, he posted: “THANK YOU for a hell of a year. We family forever @patriots”. He added, “Until we meet again,” signing off with his jersey number.

The post came after Diggs unfollowed the Patriots on Instagram and wiped his feed clean, moves that preceded the official announcement. Earlier, before the Super Bowl, Diggs had described his journey to New England as “perfect timing,” saying, “I was coming off an ACL injury. New team. New situation. New coaches. New teammates. It all happened exactly how it was supposed to”.

New England now faces its most pressing need at wide receiver. Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte, and DeMario Douglas currently top the depth chart, none recorded more than 600 yards last season. The Patriots are expected to pursue upgrades aggressively.

Top targets include Colts free agent Alec Pierce, who posted a career-high 1,003 yards in 2025, and Eagles trade candidate A.J. Brown, who has connections to head coach Mike Vrabel from their Titans days. Bears receiver D.J. Moore has also surfaced in trade speculation.

For Diggs, the release launches his search for a fifth team in four years. The 32-year-old has recorded seven 1,000-yard seasons in his career and remains one of the most accomplished receivers available. Potential suitors include the Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, and Los Angeles Chargers.

His 2025 season proved he can still produce at a high level despite age and a torn ACL suffered in 2024. But his contract demands, legal situation, and declining deep speed will shape the market. The receiver who once caught the “Minneapolis Miracle” now seeks one more act in a career defined by dramatic exits.
