James Marsden Calls His Cyclops Return in Avengers: Doomsday “A Nice Little Homecoming”

James Marsden is back in the red visor, and he couldn’t be happier. The X-Men alum, who first brought Cyclops to life in 2000 and last wore the suit in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014, is suiting up once again for Marvel’s highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday. For Marsden, returning to the role after nearly two decades feels like “a nice little homecoming” — even if he jokes that he’s “getting a little long in the tooth” to be a superhero.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the 51-year-old actor admitted he’s spent years fielding the same question from fans: “When are you coming back?” For a while, his answer was simple — Cyclops was dead. “Well, maybe not,” he teased, adding that it’s been “pretty special” to revisit the character that first put him on the Hollywood map. “It was the first real event project I was ever part of, and stepping back into that role really meant a lot.”

Marsden won’t be returning alone. Avengers: Doomsday is assembling a jaw-dropping lineup of Marvel veterans, with Sir Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Channing Tatum (Gambit), and Rebecca Romijn (Mystique) all back in action. The movie will also see Earth’s Mightiest Heroes joined by The Fantastic Four — Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as The Thing.

The star-studded cast doesn’t stop there. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Lewis Pullman will also take part in the multiversal showdown, which pits the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters December 18, 2026, and promises to be a massive Marvel team-up event. As Anthony Mackie teased, filming is still “in the midst of it,” but the energy on set is high. If Marsden’s excitement is anything to go by, Cyclops fans might want to start counting down the days now — because their leader is officially back.
