Sam Nivola is making sure Hollywood knows one thing — his success is all his own. The 21-year-old White Lotus breakout may be the son of actors Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola, but he’s not here for the “nepo baby” label. In fact, his parents banned him from auditioning until he turned 18.
That plan backfired when, at 17, his high school drama teacher secretly hooked him up with an audition for White Noise. Sam sent in a self-tape without telling mum and dad, and when he got called back to play Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig’s on-screen son, he had to spill the beans. Their reaction? Pure shock — and a quick push to take the role when they found out it was for legendary director Noah Baumbach.
“Other than my genes, I don’t think I can attribute much of my success to my parents,” Sam told Variety. “I feel proud that I’ve done it for myself — and sometimes in spite of them. I didn’t get my dad’s agent to call anyone. I did it myself.”
His rebellious streak runs deep — so much so that he dropped out of Columbia University after just one semester studying Latin and film. “My parents were upset. It totally scared them,” he admitted. “But I wasn’t happy because I couldn’t dedicate everything to acting. Plus, I have problems with authority figures.”
When The White Lotus exploded in popularity, Sam couldn’t even walk through Brooklyn without being mobbed by fans. So, he and his friends got creative — asking ChatGPT to find “the worst bar in the East Village.” The result? A silent taproom where talking was banned. “We’re yelling, ‘This place is f****** awesome!’ and everyone’s like, ‘Shhh!’” Sam laughed.
Whether it’s dodging fame or ditching college, Sam Nivola is making career moves his way — and proving you don’t need to lean on a famous last name to make it big.
