Taron Egerton is brushing off long-running fan rumours linking him to the iconic X-Men character Wolverine — and this time, he’s calling it what it is: strange, flattering, but ultimately baseless.
The Kingsman star, known for his charm and chiseled roles, addressed the speculation in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, making it clear he’s not suiting up in adamantium claws anytime soon.
“I feel like it happens every time I take my shirt off in a film,” Egerton said, laughing at how frequently the rumours resurface. “The Wolverine thing is almost like a joke at this point.”
According to him, the theory doesn’t stem from insider buzz or studio chatter, but simply from fans’ visual assumptions. “The truth of the matter is I don’t look like that when I take my shirt off — unless it’s in a film where the part needs me to look that way.”
Still, Egerton admits he’s humbled by the idea that fans even consider him for the role Hugh Jackman has embodied for over two decades. “It’s flattering… but I also think no one is ever going to accept anyone in that role other than Hugh Jackman. He’s completely synonymous with it.”
Outside the Marvel fan casting, Egerton recently starred in Netflix’s holiday thriller Carry-On, playing a TSA agent caught in a blackmail plot on Christmas Eve. While the film was a streaming hit, don’t expect a sequel just yet.
“Carry-On 2 is really hard,” he explained. “It needs to celebrate Christmas and the people who work during it, but also deliver a big plot twist — without it feeling ridiculous. So I haven’t heard anything, but stranger things have happened.”
Despite playing a TSA agent, the actor says the role hasn’t affected his real-life airport experiences. “I took a photo with a TSA agent at the Dallas airport a couple days ago — that was a fun bit of symmetry. But no, it hasn’t made travel difficult. I mostly get by pretty unnoticed.”
For now, fans can stop speculating — Egerton’s not Wolverine, and he’s fine with keeping the claws in the comic books.
