James Cameron isn’t slowing down anytime soon. The legendary filmmaker has confirmed he’s “good to go” to direct both Avatar 4 and Avatar 5, which are slated for release in 2029 and 2031 respectively.
Now 70, Cameron says he’s in great health and ready to dive deep into Pandora for another stretch. Having already completed work on Avatar: Fire and Ash — the third installment set for release this December — he told Empire magazine:
“I’m healthy, I’m good to go. I’m not going to rule it out. I’ve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years… but if I can, I’ll just do it.”
Cameron, whose resume includes some of the biggest blockbusters of all time like Titanic and Terminator 2, acknowledged that while he handed Alita: Battle Angel to Robert Rodriguez, he stayed actively involved — and says something similar could happen again in the future. He has no intention of directing Avatar 6 and 7, but he’s already developed ideas for them:
“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point. Mortality catches up.”
Still, the passion is clearly there. Cameron recently previewed Avatar: Fire and Ash to a select audience and says the response has been overwhelmingly positive — even calling it “maybe the best of the three so far.”
“The work is exceptional from the actors. It’s pretty heart-wrenching in a good way.”
Starring returning cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver, the new chapter promises to deliver even more emotional depth and visual spectacle.
Cameron also admitted he was hesitant at first to build a franchise around the original 2009 Avatar, which still holds the record as the highest-grossing film of all time.
“I had to think long and hard whether I even wanted to make another Avatar film… When you’ve done something that’s been that transcendent in terms of success, do you really want to go try and do that again?”
But clearly, the answer was yes — and with two more films officially under his direction, James Cameron is still fully committed to expanding the Avatar universe, one ambitious epic at a time.
