Gavin Rossdale may be a rock star, but when it comes to parenting, he’s all about letting his kids find their own rhythm — literally.
The 59-year-old Bush frontman, who shares Kingston (19), Zuma (16), and Apollo (11) with ex-wife Gwen Stefani, recently opened up about his hands-off approach to nurturing creativity in his family. In an interview with Us Weekly, Gavin explained:
“I’m really careful not to push. I’m their dad — father, not friend.”
While his children have clearly inherited the musical gene, Gavin is intentional about giving them space to explore it on their own terms.
“Now, if they discover it independently, that’s when it’s like, I don’t want it to suck,” he joked.
And according to him, they’re already crushing it.
“Kingston will play an amazing song. Zuma has begun recording — he’s out of control. I’m not even the best singer in my house anymore. It’s super annoying,” Gavin laughed.
“I take pride in listening to everything they’re doing and not sharing anything that I’m doing with them.”
But just because he keeps his own music lowkey at home doesn’t mean his kids don’t have opinions — strong ones. Gavin shared a hilarious story about playing a new song for Zuma:
“I played it for him thinking he’d be impressed. He made a face and said, ‘You’re not putting that out, are you?’ I said, ‘Well, I was thinking of it. Why?’
He goes, ‘Machinehead is legendary. I dunno about that.’ Then he just walked out. Destroyed me. Killed me.”
Ouch. Rock star ego? Humbled — by your own teenager.
Outside the studio, Gavin says what matters most is spending time with his children.
“Everything is better when they’re there,” he told E! News in 2022. “It’s all about just the time you spend with them.”
Gavin also shares a 36-year-old daughter, Daisy Lowe, with British designer Pearl Lowe, making him a father of four — and a true example of blending music and parenting with humility and humor.
At home, he might not be “Machinehead,” but he’s definitely Dad — and that’s just how he likes it.
