Fourteen years after the heartbreaking loss of Amy Winehouse, her parents, Mitch and Janis Winehouse, came together to honour their daughter’s memory with a heartfelt visit to her grave.
The former couple, aged 74 and 70 respectively, were spotted at Edgwarebury Cemetery in north London on Wednesday, 23 July. They were joined by close friends, family members, and devoted fans who gathered to pay tribute to the late music icon with flowers and handwritten messages.
Janis, seen using a mobility walker, and Mitch, supported by a walking stick, quietly reflected at Amy’s final resting place, where she lies beside her beloved grandmother, Cynthia Levy. Despite divorcing in 1993 when Amy was just nine years old, Mitch and Janis have remained united in their love for their daughter, especially following her untimely death in 2011 at the age of 27.
Amy’s death was ruled accidental following two inquests, with the cause confirmed as alcohol poisoning. The Grammy-winning singer had battled addiction for years, facing multiple rehab stints and interventions from her family — reportedly nine in total — in a bid to help her recover.
In the wake of her passing, Mitch, Janis, and Mitch’s second wife Jane founded the Amy Winehouse Foundation, dedicated to supporting young people dealing with substance misuse and addiction. Their ongoing efforts aim to turn the tragedy of Amy’s death into a force for good.
Amy’s legacy lives on through her music. Her debut album Frank (2003) received critical acclaim and an Ivor Novello Award. But it was Back to Black (2006) that cemented her place in music history, earning five Grammy Awards and making her the first British woman to win five in a single night. The record remains one of the most celebrated albums of the 21st century.
In 2023, Amy’s life was portrayed on screen in a biopic starring Marisa Abela. The film, however, drew criticism from some of her friends and fans, particularly for using Amy’s former Camden home to depict scenes from her darkest moments. Despite the controversy, the film renewed interest in her story and reignited conversations about fame, mental health, and addiction.
Born on 14 September 1983 in London, Amy Winehouse was a prodigious talent from her teenage years. She joined the National Youth Jazz Orchestra at 17 and signed with 19 Management in 2002. Her raw voice, emotional lyrics, and fearless honesty set her apart — and even in death, she remains one of the most iconic voices of her generation.
